My name is David Mathiesen and I have been in the tennis game almost my whole life. My own tennis journey started when I was 10 years old and due to me being a fast learner and a hard worker within 4 years I became the Danish Junior Champion. I played internationally for the Danish Junior Team and wanted to go full time/pro but due to many injuries I lost motivation and quit the high-level journey when I was around 17. However, I still played recreationally in the Danish Division 1.

Due to my high injury prevalent journey, I started wondering if I had approached my training the right way. I decided to go the academic route and study sports science with the goal of getting back into tennis as a strength & conditioning coach and hopefully influence the Danish tennis training culture in a positive direction. The further I got in my studies of the human body the more I realized the need for educating players and coaches in tennis specific physical training.

I became the strength & conditioning coach for the Danish Tennis Federation and Viljan Tennis Academy as I was finishing my masters with specialty in “Physical Training, Periodization, and Training Planning in Elite Tennis”. I spent the following 5-6 years working with the best players in the country (among others the 2012 Wimbledon doubles champ Frederik Nielsen) and at the same time educating coaches and clubs on the physical aspect of tennis. Besides working as a strength & conditioning coach, I also worked as an assistant tennis coach in the tennis academy and was fortunate to learn from some of the best tennis coaches nationally and internationally. In 2018 I decided I wanted to dig deeper into tennis coaching and so I became a tennis coach in one of the bigger Danish tennis clubs (Roskilde) where I got to work with a wide range of ages and levels and eventually became responsible for the development of the most talented juniors age 12-16.

My own training has ranged across multiple sports from tennis to Thai boxing and climbing. I have also solo backpacked in many parts of the world and travelled in many 3rd world countries. These experiences outside of tennis have taught me to see, respect and connect with people from all kinds of different cultures and layers of life.

The mountains of Colorado brought me to Fort Collins since June 2022, where I now live with my family and explore the mountains as much as possible. I believe it is essential to challenge myself and deal with fears throughout life in order to truly grow as a human being.
