Irene just finished her sophomore high school tennis season this weekend playing 1st singles at the Fossil Ridge High School team. She's generally been doing well this season and qualified for the individual State Championships this weekend. She cruised through her first two matches before playing the Semi's against the number 2 seed. She lost the first set in a close tiebreak (after having a couple of set points), and then came back and won the second set in a tiebreak, but then lost the third set 6-2. Now, she had to play her second match of the day in a new bracket where she would have to win two matches to get 3rd place. The rough loss from the semi's carried over mentally in the next match that same day, and she lost the first set but then she turned it around and won the next two.
The next day she then had to play for third place against a higher ranked player that she had never beat before. Again, she lost the first set but then won the next two and the match!
The last 6 months Irene has been doing a lot of physical work to elevate her athletic capabilities which shows in her foot work, quality of hitting, strength and endurance on the court.
Irene, I don't think you would have been able to pull those last two victories off without the good work you've been doing off the court the last 6 months. Also, you had a lot of opportunities to give up after your semifinal loss, but you didn't. You stayed in the fight and showed a lot of heart and will, and for that you can be very proud of yourself. I'm looking forward to keeping up our quality work and development this Summer and then we are coming for that title next year! 🎾🔥
Good job Irene.
